I'm old enough to remember when moderate Republicans still controlled their party and that they, like Democrats were pro-choice and endorsed the ERA. Richard Nixon, of all people, was the one who established the EPA, for example. You know it's a bad thing when Nixon starts looking good compared to current Republicans.

This all changed in 1980, when Ronald Reagan realized he needed the tinfoil hat wearing wingnut fundamentalists to win and the Republican party started pandering to them. I remember George Bush Sr was originally pro choice, but flip flopped once he became Reagan's running mate.

And it's been all downhill since then for the Republican party.

I've noticed that quite a few Republicans this year are jumping ship; they've had enough of the wingnuts running the party and the country into the ground. We can only hope these moderate Republicans band together and take back countrol. of their party, so that we'll once again see the Republican party of Eisenhower and they'll once again be worthy opponents to the Democratic party.

I can remember this era as well. I became a "conservative" starting with my first vote in a presidential election, which I cast for Barry Goldwater in 1964. Back then a conservative was a “cautious” person, one who believed in keeping one foot on dry ground and stirring gently with the other foot.

We also believed in “conserving”. To name a few: Conserving applied to the enviroment and wildlife. It applied to money, both personal money and government money. A conservative believed in protecting the rights of the individual. It was a different time. Today, being a “conservative” has morphed into Frankenstein monster, a sewed together amalgamation of religion belief and corporate business interests. A conservative also believed the sanctity and sovereignty of nation-states, and thus belived in non-intervention abroad. It was sort of a live and let live philosophy. It was Kennedy’s incursion into Vietnam that made me a “conservative” to begin with .

A conservative of today no longer resembles a conservative as I knew it. The times, they have changed. I will never again vote for another Republican or “conservative”.

And, I don’t share your prediction that Republicans will “once again be worthy opponents to the Democratic Party”. I make this statement from my indivdual perspective. I am old, and I can’t see into the future beyond a decade or two. There are too many people on the planet, the resources are becoming scarce, and consequently we are heading into a socialistic phase of gloabal governance. That’s okay with me. Any form of political philsophy would be better than which is advocated and practiced by today’s conservative Republicans.

I love you guys!
Thanks for the awesome responses. I'm old enough to know what you're talking about regarding what "conservatives" and "Republicans" were.
